Description
As documented by the car’s passport (VIN: ZAR 116 000 0000 1014, license plate: MI-39904-L), this is a historically important works rally car from Alfa Romeo and Autodelta:
• Initially, Bruno Bentivogli won the 1982 Italian Group N Rally Championship with it.
• Then, Autodelta turned this chassis into its test car for the 1983 Safari Rally – developed and driven by rally legend Sandro Munari (as documented by the great book from O. Cantú and R. Barbato, by the attached Autosprint article, and by the 5-minute long PR video from Alfa Romeo:
• Having returned from the two-month test programme in Kenya, Autodelta sold the car back to Bruno Bentivogli, who dismantled it and put it in his garage for forty years (!)
• The current owner bought the car in 2024, with the aim to perform a mild restoration, and to keep this truly unique works rally car (Alfa Romeo only ever built two Safari cars) as original as possible.
While the car is largely disassembled, it’s almost complete: The body only needs some stickers, and in mechanical terms, merely the safety-relevant features (roll-cage, fuel tank, brakes, suspension etc) need overhaul or renewal.
As such, it can very easily be returned to its original condition.
Contains many lovely details and time-travel features, such as the works-original Sparco race seats (tailor-upholstered in factory-original cloth!), the original Klippan belts, the Carello headlight covers, the bent bull bar (see photo with “il drago”) and lots of sand 😉
Included in the price is a comprehensive package of new and original parts, incl.:
• Fresh 3.0L QV engine, dyno-tested by OKTech
• Complete and standard GTV6 2.5L engine
• 2.5L engine block, with bore increased to 3.0L (SaVaLi)
• Fresh SZ gearbox, incl. oil cooler
• New QV camshafts
• Additional 2,5L crankshaft
• Many Pirelli tires, Canonica rims and parts, as documented in the attached list (see photos)
In addition, the paperwork includes:
• The vehicle registration document
• The registration certificate
• The documentation between Bentivogli and Autodelta SpA (driver contract, sales agreement etc)
• The planning and contacts for the original decal
All in all, a unique chance to acquire a truly important car in Alfa Romeo’s history, a well-documented chapter in Munari’s Safari career, and an entry ticket to all great events from Slowly Sideways to Rally Legend, from Dakar Classic to Goodwood Festival of Speed etc.
