Powerful, muscular, and instantly recognizable, the Renault 5 Turbo continues to impress enthusiasts more than 40 years after its debut. Its radical rear mid-engine layout, combined with an offset wheelbase and massively widened tracks, creates a taut, aggressive silhouette that was truly without equal in its era.
The growing success of historic motorsport events—within which the Renault 5 has become one of the crowd favorites, particularly in France, its country of origin—has reignited strong interest in the most extreme competition variants, such as the “Cévennes,” “Tour de Corse,” and the legendary “Maxi 5.”
In response to this rising demand, several companies have specialized in the development and (re)construction of Renault 5 Turbo models. Among them, 3S Développement, based in the hills above Nice, is one of the most highly regarded. It was in their workshops that the car presented here was assembled between 2013 and 2014. It is identified by internal 3S Développement serial number 169, riveted in the engine bay.
Built on the basis of a 1981 Renault 5 Turbo bodyshell, the car was constructed using new components, compliant with either “Cévennes” or “Tour de Corse” specifications, depending on the preferences and budgetary constraints of its first owner, Gilles Gibier.
Of excellent overall quality, both mechanically and in terms of bodywork, the car is enhanced by its iconic “Diac” livery.
It made its competition debut at the 2015 Tour de Corse Historique, finishing 50th overall. It returned the following year (2016) with a very similar result, placing 52nd overall.
Later acquired by Renault Baracci Automobile, a Renault dealership in southern Corsica, the car once again entered the historic version of the famous island rally in 2018, driven by Guillaume Chavet.
Following an engine failure, the car was returned to 3S Développement, where it underwent a complete rebuild, before being sold to Casanova Sport Auto.
Used only during three test sessions by team owner Christophe Casanova, the Renault 5 changed hands again in 2023. It returned to the Tour de Corse Historique in 2024, entered in the VHRS category with Laurent Paolacci and Sébastien Andreani, but unfortunately did not reach the finish.
Presented in very good condition, this Renault 5 Turbo benefits from a fully detailed invoice history as well as two independent expert reports. One of these includes a technical assessment by Jean-François Liénéré, former co-driver of François Chatriot, Renault Sport Team Manager, and an undisputed authority on the Renault 5 Turbo.
A competition car built with great care, featuring clear and well-documented provenance, equally legitimate as a collector’s item and fully ready to perform on special stages, thanks to its valid PTH passport..
