Description
For sale: a professionally prepared 1972 Ford Escort RS1600 Mk1, formerly part of the collection of the late Wim Luijbregts.
This impressive and characterful historic rally car has been built using high-quality competition components and is presented in its distinctive period-style Daily Mirror rally livery.
The Escort features classic wide wheel arches, period-style alloy rally wheels, four Hella spotlights and a fully equipped rally interior. The right-hand-drive cockpit includes a full roll cage, Sparco bucket seats, a competition steering wheel, rally instrumentation, rev counter, tripmeter and various competition switches and controls.
ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN
The car is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine built by Sherwood Engines. It is therefore not fitted with a standard 1,600 cc engine.
The engine and drivetrain specification includes:
• Sherwood Engines 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine
• Dry-sump lubrication system
• New crankshaft
• Twin Weber carburettors
• AP Racing twin-plate competition clutch
• ZF gearbox
• Fully floating rear axle
• ZF limited-slip differential
• Electric power steering
According to the information available, the engine is capable of revving to approximately 10,500 rpm. For regular rally use, a maximum of approximately 8,500 to 9,000 rpm is recommended.
The exact power output should be independently verified by the buyer.
SUSPENSION AND BRAKES
The Escort has been prepared using high-quality rally components, including:
• AP Racing brakes
• Fully floating rear axle with ZF differential
• Believed to be fitted with Proflex dampers
• Wide period-style rally wheels
• Front strut brace
The exact specification and setup of the limited-slip differential and dampers should be verified by the buyer.
RALLY EQUIPMENT
• Full roll cage
• Sparco bucket seats
• Competition steering wheel with centre marker
• Professional rally instrumentation
• Co-driver tripmeter/rally computer
• Four Hella spotlights with protective covers
• Competition bonnet pins
• UK-sourced rally wiring
• Period-style Daily Mirror rally livery
• Dave Jenkins Motorsport reference in the engine bay
CONDITION
The car presents as a genuine, purpose-built historic rally car rather than a concours restoration. The bodywork shows age- and competition-related marks, including several small cracks in places.
Before entering any official event, the buyer should check the condition, validity and homologation of all safety equipment, including the seats, harnesses and roll cage. Replacement or renewed FIA approval may be required depending on the intended event or championship.
REGISTRATION AND DOCUMENTATION
The car is registered in the Netherlands. Its Dutch RDW registration is currently suspended.
An extensive collection of invoices is included with the car, covering maintenance, repairs and newly fitted parts. A valuation report dated 2022 and various additional documents are also available.
Prospective buyers are invited to inspect the complete documentation and satisfy themselves regarding the car’s exact technical specification, history, registration status and eligibility for their intended events.
No representation is made regarding current FIA homologation or eligibility.
