Description
The car offered was built by Lampelmaier Motorsport in 2017 on basis of a MK1 Escort 1300 GT from 1974.
History:
When Ford started the production of the Escort in 1968, it was very clear that this new Escort should also take over the role of the Ford works car. By this time, the Lotus Cortina MKII had already passed the peak of their career and Ford needed urgently something new to be able to build on the previous successes.
The first Ford Escort Mk1 race car was built in Boreham, based on one of the very first ever built 1300 GT models. Instead of the standard parts, this prototype has been equipped with Fords famous Twin Cam engine, a tree-rail gearbox, and a big rear axle.
Theses car manged to win various race and rally competitions in 1968 already, just to mention the wins of Greek Acropolis Rally, the Austrian Alpine or the 1000 Lakes Rally. History proved that the Escort Mk1 and Mk2 have been able to win countless national and international competitions year by year and even world championships like in 1979 and 1981. Many racers used the Escort until the beginning of the 1990 and found it still a competitive car, but the BDA was ageing.
In the meantime, Ford used other cars like the Sierra RS successfully in racing, but the heart of many drivers still has beaten for the old Escort. At this point in time the Escort has been upgraded with more state-of-the-art technology from known tuners like David Sutton, Burton Power, Cosworth, Suhe or Zakspeed, just to name some of them. Back then it was becoming popular to strip the turbo from Cosworth YB’s to have an alternative to the BDA engine of the Escorts.
In 1989, Roy Millington started to produce the first series of Diamond engines to have an alternative replacement for the BDA. In the following years the Millington engine were further developed, and customers were fitting them in Westfield’s, Ford Escorts in post historic classics, Hillclimb cars and historic Chevrons in the USA.
By 2005 the ever-evolving Diamond had a name as the ultimate Escort mk2 engine and had now been fitted into Colin McRae’s ‘out of hours’ Escort built by DJM motorsport. The latest and most powerful engine built by Millington is the Diamond Series 2+.
