Opel Kadett C Coupe GTE Group 2
The car was built in 1978 as a 2 litre injection GTE homologation special. They were a major force in Group 1 and 2, mainly in Europe (and still are, so there is good parts availability).
We can trace its history back to when Bengt Nilsson drove for Opel Team Sweden to 9th overall on the Swedish round of the WRC in 1981. We have period pictures and the Swedish registration documents and number plates.
It then became a clubman car in Sweden. Bought by us in the UK in 2013, we have built it into a solid Group 2 rally car which we have also used on ERA/HERO type events. The car has been invited to the forestry stage at Goodwood Festival of Speed three times.
Shell and interior
LHD, seam welded shell with full T45 weld in cage. All lines inside. The engine bay has been gusseted and the damper towers reinforced. The sump guard and mounting add rigidity. Seat rails are welded in, FIA specification seats and belts are in date. The dash is flocked, carpet keeps the noise down. New door cards keep it all neat. Nav side features a Brantz International 3 PRO Tripmeter and has 2 operational probes, there is also a Brantz Rally Timer plus map light and interior light.
Shell recently re-prepped and painted in correct white and yellow, in Opel Sweden livery with period advertising.
Electrics & Fuel
The car is fitted with a competition loom by Bremax. Fire system (all in date) and cut out are electronic. An Odyssey Extreme Dry Cell battery is fitted in a box behind driver’s seat. LED work lights in boot and under bonnet, Power for intercom on cage GPS Tracker feed are also present. Four Cibies on single bar, all relayed are also present..
Two separately switched, Facet pumps each with it’s own filter, feed fuel from custom built 12 gallon alloy tank to a further filter before feeding the twin 45 DCOE carbs. Fuel lines [Teflon lined steel braided] run inside the car
Recently rebuilt Scholar engine giving a very tractable 150bhp with power from 3,000rpm and set up to run on 95 fuel. About 200 stage miles rebuild. Tubular exhaust manifold and new skidded system.
Three gear boxes. Original Opel competition ratio 4 speed box, a spare standard ratio 4 speed box and for long distance events a Getrag 5 speed with overdriven 5th. Axle has solid Dural brace, original 4.75 final drive with LSD. A spare axle with a longer diff also available. Recent fitted with new Bilsteins, flies and handles very well. Discs all round fitted with Mintex competition pads. A bias valve and very effective fly off hydraulic handbrake are also fitted.
Upper and lower front suspension arms are reinforced and fitted with heavy duty bushes.
Wheels: 9 ATS 13” rims and 6 14” Revolutions. Good forest DMacks plus many 13” and 14” tyres for road/regularity rally use.
