A recent change of plans forces the reluctant sale of my Renault Clio Williams rally car — a rare Mk1 Clio, already MSA log-booked and freshly passported. It’s an ideal base for a stunning F2 Maxi tribute or a historic demonstration car.

I bought the car with the intention of building a replica of Jean Ragnotti’s iconic silver Diac F2 Maxi — the legendary cars featured in many “Jean Ragnotti Tribute” videos on YouTube. Rallying History UK confirmed how scarce Mk1 rally Clios now are, and said they would be keen to see this car developed into a Maxi or Group A–style build and welcomed into their historic club.

This was intended as a father-and-sons project, but my boys are still a bit young and prefer other things. Rather than let the car sit, I’d like to see it progress under someone who appreciates how rare and exciting a platform this is. If it doesn’t sell, I may continue with the project myself.

You can either progress the Maxi build — where finished replicas and ex-works cars now fetch very strong money — or simply update the out-of-date safety gear and compete with it as it stands. The car already has a new MSA Passport, so much of the admin is already done.

For perspective on value:
• Genuine Clio F2 Maxi ex-works cars now sell for £200k+.
• Matter-built FIA historic Maxi shells are around €24,000 for the cage and certification alone.
• A Custom Cages FIA Mk1 Clio cage is £5,250 + VAT fitted.

Buying this fully built, caged, seam-welded, wide-arched Williams-based car for under £20k is a huge head start on a future appreciating asset.
